Glee equality…

Ok, first of all? Lemme tell you how this gon’ be, If I may? This Tumblr right here:

Is a prime example of why parts of the glee fandom can be so utterly ignorant. To all you straight teenage Darren Criss fangirl’s (that let’s face it, make up a large chunk of the Klaine fandom) please do not tar LGBT equality issues with your odd desire just to see yet more Blaine on our screens. Klaine are in no way underrepresented on this show, they are the shows second biggest couple, they are catered too more than most, they practically had a whole season’s worth of content revolve solely around them last season, and now because Blaine didn’t appear in one episode (which they still managed to shoehorn him in, yet we had no explanation of Tina’s disappearance for two episodes) suddenly people shout ‘inequality’? It’s frankly disgusting, Glee has been great to this couple and handled them admirably.

Glee does have a problem however - but it’s not a same-sex issue, it’s a sex issue, as in male > female, male problems > female problems. I don’t think I even need to explain why when talking within the context of LGBT ‘equality’ that comparing Klaine to the shows other same-sex couple Brittana is, frankly, laughable. One has been treated with respect and been relatively well developed, the other has been literally abandoned and ridiculed to the point of utter offense. If you really want to talk about equality just watch the episode 14 of Glee ‘On My Way’ where David Karofsky, a boy who was outed, then watch episode 7 ‘I Kissed A Girl’ where Santana Lopez, a girl who was outed - both in similar fashions. I don’t think I even need to elaborate on the enormity of the double standard’s in this show and how differently they were treated. But please don’t confuse this double standard as being an issue of non-heterosexuality vs. heterosexuality or heteronormativity even. It’s the double standard of men vs women. It’s a writing style that even effects our very own female protagonist Rachel Berry, who once used to be a driven and head-strong character - but now is merely a prop for her boyfriend Finn or her sudden new best friend Kurt. It’s visible in Quinn’s characterization, Tina’s non-existence, Mercedes, Emma, Brittany, Santana etc. The females of this show rarely have their own storyline and when they do it’s utterly hijacked by a male (Brittany winning class president was more about Kurt’s gay loss than her gay victory, Mercedes having a love interest was just randomly thrown in to build up Sam’s coming back, Tina’s existence now sadly revolves around everything Mike she’s almost like the stereotypical subservient Asian wife, and most astoundingly of all Santana’s coming out ended up being about Finn). So Klainer’s please don’t confuse this show’s not-so-underhanded-sexism-anymore issues with same-sex issues, because that’s not what’s plaguing this show.

Do you know what’s sad? Brittany and Santana since getting together literally have not had a conversation (bar the ‘Heart’ episode, which let’s face it only happened because the writing received a backlash) - but make no mistake, it’s not because they are a same-sex couple, it’s because they’re two girls, ergo in the writers eyes not worthy of their creative attention whatsoever. What astounds me most is that they actually thought it was OK (or possibly still think it’s OK).

Glee, I don’t need you to remind me we live in a sexist, patriarchal society. I fell in love with your show because it stuck a finger up to such notions and now only appears to be conforming to them. You’ve regressed horribly.
