The Top 5 Worst Instances Of Characters Being Used As Plot Devices On Glee (Thanks to @anon for the suggestion)
No.5
Definition: ‘A plot device is an object or character in a story whose sole purpose is to advance the plot of the story, or alternatively to overcome some difficulty in the plot - A contrived or random plot device may annoy or confuse the audience, causing them to abandon their suspension of disbelief and by doing so their willingness to believe or enjoy what they are watching’
The Character: Rachel Berry
The Plot Device: Rachel’s nose is broken by Finn’s terrible dancing, the doctor she’s taken to see immediately tries to convince her to get a nose job (and subsequently every time she sees him in the episode) – First, doesn’t she need her parents’ consent for this? Surely they’d need to sign some official papers for her (consent, insurance, etc). Secondly, this subject has been addressed (dozens of times over the past two seasons of Glee), Rachel’s talked about (or people have said something about her) getting a nose job and she’s always made these little speeches about how she doesn’t need one, her nose makes her unique, she looks fine the way she is, and damn it! Barbra didn’t get one so neither shall she! So why are we going there again? And to such an extreme as actually having her consider a nose job? We know she won’t get one, we’ve heard her talk about not needing/wanting one so why do we need to have her state she apparently does want one, and needs her friends to talk her out of it? So we could get the Glee club to do Lady GaGa’s Born This Way? They could have had it just be the week’s assignment, they didn’t need to pull out this contrived plot device.
The Glee girls make an announcement.
This was literally a whirlwind idea brought up to me by http://masareesepuff.tumblr.com/ yesterday. The credit goes to her for the idea, I only came up with small concepts for some of the designs. She is the head designer for all of this. Any questions, she’s the one to talk to. :)
